My Thoughts:
I was really
excited to dive into Starglass, I know quite a few YA books have taken place in space , but for
some reason I haven't read any of them yet. Phoebe North great an amazing story
that was full of an interesting cast of characters that were not what they all
seemed on the surface and I loved
getting to see each side and the surprise of learning that what you saw and what you thought about
a character was not always what it seemed.
Terra is
growing up right before the readers eyes throughout the book, learning and
growing, and changing. Terra lives on board an elaborate spaceship which was so
intricate I couldn't imagine it even feeling like a spaceship at all. Hundreds
of years ago one of her ancestors had taken a chance for the future of her decedents
and boarded this ship to a new life
and hopefully a new planet. The
Council which is essentially the government of the ship controls everything the
people of the ship do and has from the
beginning. Terra lost her mother young and it now just her and her father. Her father was one of those characters that
was hard to like because of the way he treated Terra but, at the same time
you could tell how much he loved Terra , I kept wanting to know more
about him because it always felt like he
was hiding something, more that I wanted to know, why he was the way he was and what the meaning
behind the words he used was. Terra has never really felt like she was normal
or that she fit in, she has always felt out of place and she just wants to belong. When she gets to join the secret rebellion group she feels
like she has finally found a place for herself, somewhere she belongs where
people understand her but, it doesn't last and Terra always felt like she was waging a war inside herself over what was right and what was wrong.
Overall,
Phoebe North created a novel that was layered and fascinating with each and
every character leaving a mark on its reader. I definitely recommend it, as
much as it sounds like a science fiction read it was far from it and if you
enjoy engaging and complicated characters then this book is for you!
