Review: Daphne and The Mysterious Girls Secret Bathroom Society By: Robert Shields

Title: Daphne And The Mysterious Girls Secret Bathroom Society
Author: Robert Shields
Published: December 19, 2011
My Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
Goodreads Summary:

Following years of persecution at the hands of Vivica Vance, Daphne Downing levels the playing field wielding her No. 2 Ticonderoga pencil as she belatedly enters the world of witchcraft. Daphne becomes part of the Mysterious Girls’ Secret Bathroom Society and finds out that the politics governing witchcraft are daunting and sometimes deadly. She realizes she is aligned with the Charmers in this political battle with the Spiters led by her nemesis, Vivica. Along the way, she discovers that witches do not perform magic or witchcraft but a differentiated form of physics that only some women have mastered. The story deepens as she learns about the long history of witches’ domination and annihilation of wizards.

My Thoughts:

I was lucky enough to be asked to review this book by the author and I was pleasantly surprised by what I got to read. I didn't know much about the book before reading except the summary on goodreads. For me, it was a fun, light, and quick read and was the first book about witches that I have read and it was definitely a different one at that.

We first met Daphne, the main character, who her whole life has been bullied by the most popular girl in school Vivica Vance or Vi as everyone calls her. After a fight breaks out between Daphne and Vi in the girl's bathroom, Daphne makes a startling discovery, Vi is a witch. So, Daphne then goes home and is determined to make her and Vi equals by trying to copy the spell she saw Vi do and with the help of her best friend and sister, Daphne finds out that she is a witch too.

I was really interested in the way, witches were portrayed in this book. In most, witches can perform spells by using "magic", well Daphne and her fellow witches perform spells by manipulating matter using physics, no magic involved. It was refreshing because I felt a much better understanding of how it all worked and I thought it was a very interesting idea instead of using the idea of magic, they used something tangible that everyone knows exists.

Overall, I enjoyed this book, I liked that it wasn't too heavy of a read, although there was still action and adventure and mishaps involved, it didn't take itself too seriously. The only thing that I didn't like is sometimes during some of the explanations of physics, I got a little lost and confused but, overall a very fun read. Check it Out!

Happy Reading!
Kristin
