Review: Open Road Summer By: Emery Lord

Title: Open Road Summer
Author: Emery Lord
Published: April 15th, 2014
Source: Bought
My Rating: 5 out of 5 stars! 2014 Favorite!
Goodreads Summary:

After breaking up with her bad-news boyfriend, Reagan O’Neill is ready to leave her rebellious ways behind. . . and her best friend, country superstar Lilah Montgomery, is nursing a broken heart of her own. Fortunately, Lilah’s 24-city tour is about to kick off, offering a perfect opportunity for a girls-only summer of break-up ballads and healing hearts. But when Matt Finch joins the tour as its opening act, his boy-next-door charm proves difficult for Reagan to resist, despite her vow to live a drama-free existence. This summer, Reagan and Lilah will navigate the ups and downs of fame and friendship as they come to see that giving your heart to the right person is always a risk worth taking. A fresh new voice in contemporary romance, Emery Lord’s gorgeous writing hits all the right notes.

My  Thoughts:

I will admit I remember seeing this book on Netgalley and thought too contemporary for me and I never requested it. Man, did I eat my words, Open Road Summer was amazing and adorable! I kept seeing reviews all over and every single one I saw was completely adorable. It is the perfect book for summer and it makes me want to go on a road trip right now! It was everything that I hoped it would be and so much more. It is one of those books I wish I could unread so that I could read it all over again.

Reagan O’Neill wants to change being rebellious and getting into trouble has caught up with her and lucky enough for her, her best friend Dee or Lila Montegomery country music starlet is starting her first solo tour and it gives her the opportunity to have the best girls only summer. But, little does she know that when Matt Finch joins the tour as it’s opening act everything will change.

Reagan was such a great narrator, she was sarcastic, tough, and she didn’t let anyone in easily. She loves photography and I could see the beautiful pictures she could take inside my own head just as easily. I loved the relationship between Dee and Reagan, they were so different from each other. But, they were the perfect friends to each other. Dee was getting over her first love, he let her go because he felt like he was holding her back and she was living her dream of having a music career. It was sweet and adorable and perfect.

Matt Finch, he was adorable I loved him so much. He was a part of a band with his brothers which reminded me of the Jonas Brothers and he was a great guy, he treated Dee like a sister and was always there when she needed him. When he and Reagan first met I loved the back and forth between the two of them their banter was just adorable. They were exactly what each other needed and it made it that much more adorable.

Overall, Open Road Summer is the absolutely perfect summer read. It has everything the perfect contemporary for someone like me needs, love friendship, heartbreak, but it’s too heavy. I absolutely loved it and recommend it for everyone. YOU NEED TO READ THIS BOOK!

Review: The One By: Kiera Cass

Title: The One (The Selection #3)
Author: Kiera Cass
Published: May 6th, 2014
Source: Bought
My Rating: 4 out of 5 stars!
Goodreads Summary:
The highly anticipated conclusion to Kiera Cass's #1 New York Timesbestselling Selection series, The One will captivate readers who love dystopian YA fiction and fairy tales. The One is the perfect finale for fans who have followed America's whirlwind romance since it began--and a swoon-worthy read for teens who have devoured Veronica Roth'sDivergent, Ally Condie's Matched, or Lauren Oliver's Delirium.
The Selection changed America Singer's life in ways she never could have imagined. Since she entered the competition to become the next princess of Illéa, America has struggled with her feelings for her first love, Aspen--and her growing attraction to Prince Maxon. Now she's made her choice . . . and she's prepared to fight for the future she wants.
Find out who America will choose in The One, the enchanting, beautifully romantic third book in the Selection series!
My Thoughts:

The One was one of my most anticpated reads of this year, I don’t know what I was expecting and it was a great conclusion and I really enjoyed it but, for some reason I couldn’t give it that fifth star. I wanted something else a little bit more their wasn’t any real surprises or anything that I wanted to make me so excited about this ending. It was just what I wanted and not at the same time.

I don’t want to give any spoilers away but, I will say that America and Maxon did frustrate me a bit in this one. As much as I have loved the series I grew tired of the back and forth between the two of them and after the first two books I was ready for it to be resolved and something more to happen and it was dragged out just a bit too long.

I was a little surprised at where the plot of this last book went, it expanded a little but, not enough I wanted more, I wished we could have found out more about what was going on in the last book throughout the series more and it wasn’t so focused on just the girls. I was glad that we got to expand a bit and remind us that the entire series isn’t just about the girls of the selection that their was more at stake.

Overall, The One was exactly what I was hoping it would be and not enough at the same time. I will say that I was so sad to see it end and I wanted more, I can’t wait to see what Kiera Cass writes next I am a big fan!

Review: The Murder Complex (The Murder Complex #1) By: Lindsey Cummings

Title: The Murder Complex (The Murder Complex #1)
Author: Lindsey Cummings
Published: June 10th, 2014
Source: Edelweiss E-Galley
My Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
Goodreads Summary:

An action-packed, blood-soaked, futuristic debut thriller set in a world where the murder rate is higher than the birthrate. For fans of Moira Young’s Dust Lands series, La Femme Nikita, and the movie Hanna.

Meadow Woodson, a fifteen-year-old girl who has been trained by her father to fight, to kill, and to survive in any situation, lives with her family on a houseboat in Florida. The state is controlled by The Murder Complex, an organization that tracks the population with precision.

The plot starts to thicken when Meadow meets Zephyr James, who is—although he doesn’t know it—one of the MC’s programmed assassins. Is their meeting a coincidence? Destiny? Or part of a terrifying strategy? And will Zephyr keep Meadow from discovering the haunting truth about her family?

Action-packed, blood-soaked, and chilling, this is a dark and compelling debut novel by Lindsay Cummings.

My Thoughts:

I was really looking forward to The Murder Complex, it looked a bit darker than most YA dystopian out there and it seemed a bit different, but honestly there was something that was just missing for me. The story was action packed and kept my attention but, I wanted more depth, and more background. The plot just felt like it needed to be fleshed out a bit more but, overall the plot kept me reading the story and I am curious about the next book and how the series is going to continue.

Meadow Woodson is not your average 15 year old girl, but the world she is living in is not your average world. The government controls the state of Florida, with the murder complex, reducing the population daily. Meadow has been trained by her father since she was a young girl to be able to fight for herself and always survive. Zephyr James is a ward of the state and all he remembers of his previous life is that he was happy with his parents and had a great life. But, he can’t remember that he is one of the Murder Complex’s trained assassins, one of the most important for the program.

Meadow was so tough she definitely reminded me of characters like Sabra from Blood Red Road and Lynn from Not a Drop to Drink. But, at the same time there was just something that she lacked that the other 2 characters had that would have made me give this one a higher rating. Everything moved too quickly, there was just something more that I wanted to see from Meadow and Zephyrs characters to make this book that much more that I just didn’t get.

Overall, The Murder Complex gives you exactly what the summary describes but, the plot just didn’t have enough depth and I wanted more story. At times it moved a bit too fast but, it kept me glued to the pages and I am definitely wanting to continue the series and find out where the story goes next.
