Summary:
In the beginning, there's a boy standing in the
trees . . . .
Clara Gardner has recently learned that she's part angel. Having angel blood run through her veins not only makes her smarter, stronger, and faster than humans (a word, she realizes, that no longer applies to her), but it means she has a purpose, something she was put on this earth to do. Figuring out what that is, though, isn't easy.
Her visions of a raging forest fire and an alluring stranger lead her to a new school in a new town. When she meets Christian, who turns out to be the boy of her dreams (literally), everything seems to fall into place and out of place at the same time. Because there's another guy, Tucker, who appeals to Clara's less angelic side.
As Clara tries to find her way in a world she no longer understands, she encounters unseen dangers and choices she never thought she'd have to make between honesty and deceit, love and duty, good and evil. When the fire from her vision finally ignites, will Clara be ready to face her destiny?
Unearthly is a moving tale of love and fate, and the struggle between following the rules and following your heart.

My Thoughts:
I
have to admit that I was hesitant about reading this one only because angels
are so overdone but, I had been wanting to start the trilogy and it was nice to
know that if I enjoyed this one there was not a long wait to continue the
story, Cynthia Hand did an amazing job
with this first book, I could not put this one down and I finished it in
about a day. I loved every single aspect of this book and I can wait to read
the next one!
Clara
is part angel, or an angel blood as her mother calls her. She hasn't known for
long an she is still getting the hang of the whole flying thing and making sure
that she hides her angel side by having
to dye her hair red which turns out bright orange. Every angel blood has a
purpose, a reason they are put on this earth, and Clara has had her first
visions of her purpose. So, once her and her mom find out where the
mysterious boy in her visions lives
(Wyoming) they pack up and move from California to Wyoming. It's definitely different from California and
I really enjoyed reading about Wyoming I
live close to this state and have family who
have visited so I have been there many times. Clara finally meets
Christian the boy from her visions and he is the most gorgeous and popular guy
in school, but when Christian has to leave for the summer. Clara
begins to get closer to her best friends'
brother Tucker and he shows her
how much fun Wyoming can really be.
I
really loved Clara, she was the perfect characters, I didn't feel like she was
super strong but, I didn't feel like she was weak either. She was just learning
as she went, she didn't have all the answers and she didn't sit around and wait
for them to come to her. As far as YA
mom's go, Clara's was pretty awesome, although I was frustrated with her at times because she wouldn't tell
Clara many things about being an angel blood, she wanted her to find out in
time and learn on her own but, knowing more than she did at times would have helped Clara a lot although that was the fun of the
book I guess. Now I know the real
question is am I Team Tucker or Team Christian. I have put a lot of
thought into this and right now I am leaning more towards Team Tucker,
Christian seems to perfect for me but, I didn't mind this love triangle and it
wasn't the focus of the story. The ending completely surprised me and I can't
wait to see what happens next!
One
of the main things I loved about Unearthly was the fact that even though it was
an angel book, Hand didn't fill the pages with all kinds of lore and myth. Now
don't get me wrong I do enjoy lore and myth
but, with angel books it tends to be on over drive sometime. So, if you
are like me and hesitant to read this one because you are tired of angel, I
high recommend it and am definitely
getting the next book as soon as possible!

Thanks for the great review! I've had this one on my list for awhile. Looks like I'll have to move it up the list:)
ReplyDeleteGreat review! I really loved this book, as well as the rest of the series. I was also hesitant to read it after reading Fallen & Hush, Hush (didn't like those series), but I'm glad I did:)

Aaah, one of my favourite series! Trust when I say that once you dive into the sequels, you'll have even a harder choice deciding whose team you're on. Great review! Definitely deserves the five star.

Excellent review, makes me want to grab this book right now! Can I convince you to blurb your review over at Bookstore Bookblogger Connection, so we can help get the word out about this amazing series?
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you... I'm so not an angel person at all but I really enjoyed this one because, like you said, it wasn't laden down with lore and whatnot. I thought it was a great mix of contemporary and myth. Thanks for linking to my review, too! :)
ReplyDeleteI think this is one of the better angel stories out there-I still don't really like them as paranormal creatures but would recommend this one to those who are looking for a good angel novel.
