My Thoughts:
I was really
excited to read this book, I never knew before I started blogging but, I am a
huge high fantasy fan. I love to get lost in a world that doesn't exist and
learn everything I can about some usually kick butt characters. I loved the idea
of an Asian themed book because I haven't read anything like that in YA yet so,
I was definitely looking forward to it. Unfortunately for me, this book felt a
little young, Ellen Oh created an interesting world full of demons, magic, and
war but it felt like it was written for middle grade.
Kira is not
your typical teenage girl in her home of Hansong, she is an outcast and
everybody who meets her is afraid of her because of her yellow eyes, she is a
demon slayer. She is born with special abilities to identify when a person is
being possessed by a demon is essential to the king's life. Protecting the fact
that there is still demon's in their kingdom. The king doesn't want his people
to know, it's Kira's job to kill them and be as secret as possible about what
she is doing. Kira hates having to be different and have the townspeople reject
her. She has to be tough and strong because of who she has to be. The only girl
in the king's army and the bodyguard of the heir to the throne the young
prince. The only people who really understand her is her family. The king is
her uncle so she is very close to the prince who considers her his big sister
and is in awe of her slaying abilities. Until a demon invasion hits Kira's home
of Hansong, and she is forced to protect the young prince with everything she
has.
I liked
Kira's character, she didn't let what people said about her bother her too
much. She left people alone and tried not to scare them with her eyes. But, at times you still felt the sadness that
she held inside always being different and people didn't want to accept her
because of it.
Overall,
Prophecy is a great read for the younger audience and a great introduction into
the world of high fantasy for them. The story was engaging and action packed,
but I could never fully connect with it completely!
