Review: The Immortal Rules

Title: The Immortal Rules
Author: Julie Kagawa
Published: April 24th, 2012
My Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Goodreads Summary:

In a future world, Vampires reign. Humans are blood cattle. And one girl will search for the key to save humanity.

Allison Sekemoto survives in the Fringe, the outermost circle of a vampire city. By day, she and her crew scavenge for food. By night, any one of them could be eaten.
Some days, all that drives Allie is her hatred of them. The vampires who keep humans as blood cattle. Until the night Allie herself is attacked—and given the ultimate choice. Die… or become one of the monsters.
Faced with her own mortality, Allie becomes what she despises most. To survive, she must learn the rules of being immortal, including the most important: go long enough without human blood, and you will go mad.
Then Allie is forced to flee into the unknown, outside her city walls. There she joins a ragged band of humans who are seeking a legend—a possible cure to the disease that killed off most of humankind and created the rabids, the mindless creatures who threaten humans and vampires alike.
But it isn't easy to pass for human. Especially not around Zeke, who might see past the monster inside her. And Allie soon must decide what—and who—is worth dying for.
My Thoughts:
I was so excited to read this book, I loved Julie Kagawa's Iron Fey series and I couldn't wait to see what she could do with vampire's and I loved the idea of combining vampires with a dystopian world, two of my favorite things to read in a book lol. I felt like in the beginning of the book the plot started off a little bit slow   but, about halfway through it really started to pick up and I couldn't put it down after that. I was suprised by how gritty the book was. I felt it was dark and gritty. At first, I wasn't sure if I liked that aspect of it but, I got used to it more as the story went along.
I really like the main character Allison, the story is told completely through her eyes and is her journey through becoming the one thing that she had most throughout her whole life, a vampire. What I loved the most about Allison was that she never gave up on wanting to survive and to protect the human race. When she meets  a band of humans looking for Eden, a city where only humans lived protected from vampire's she does everything she can to help them along their journey and it was definitely action packed and exciting one at that. Julie did a great job of setting up the world and the story and giving the reader everything they needed to know about how life was in this futuristic world without bogging the story down with too much back story, keeping the story on plot and throwing interesting parts that the reader needed to know along the way. I loved getting to learn from Allison's point of view what becoming a vampire was like and you got to learn it all at the same time that she did.  Throughout the story I was amazed at Allison's commitment to not abandoning her human side and even though she was doomed to a life of immortality she didn't want to give up on giving human's a better life. The ending was definitely a cliff hanger and I am really excited to read the next book in the series and see where Kagawa will take her story.
