My Thoughts:
So, I don't
know what it was about this book but, it took me a while to really get into it.
I don't know what it was that I couldn't really get into but, I just couldn't.
I enjoyed Brennan's writing but, I didn't fall in love with the characters or
the plot. I felt that this book would be great for boys, the two main
characters are both boys, and I enjoyed the narration of our main character
Nick. I will be honest though the narration seemed to be a lot of telling, if
that makes any sense. It felt like you were told about the situations the
characters were in more then saw.
Nick and
Alan are the only family that each other has, their mother is crazy but, they
always have to be ready to go because the magicians have been after them for as
long as they both can remember, and they
already got to their father. The leader of the magicians circle Black Arthur
has been after their mother ever since she left him for their father. Alan is
the older one and the only person that really seems to care about Nick. Their
mother has always been afraid of Nick and never wanted anything to do with him,
he has never known why that's just how it's always been.
I was
disappointed in the villains of the magicians. Only because when I think of the
word magicians, I don't think of evil people out to get you I think of tricks
and what we normally think of as magicians. The story didn't really start
coming together until the end and that was when I finally got it all, there was
a twist that was somewhat of a surprise but, not really. Also, the setting of
the book is in London and I was looking forward to getting to hear more about
it and you really didn't get to learn much about it at all.
Overall, I
don't know if this book was for me, I am a little bit curious to read the next
book in the series but, not enough to go run out and get it. I recommend this
one for boys, I really think it's good for the reluctant reader. Also, for
people who enjoy a good paranormalish fantasy. Brennan created an interesting plot but, it
just couldn't grab by attention. I am really looking forward to reading her new
series The Lynburn Legacy, Have you guys read any of the other books by Sarah
Rees Brennan? What did you think?
The feeling you're describing about this first book is basically how I felt and continued to feel through the whole trilogy. I just could not connect with the characters and was frequently baffled by their decisions even though I admired the writing.
